Industrial Heritage International was created in 2026 with the aim of nurturing awareness, understanding, appreciation and respect for industrial heritage across the world.
Miles Oglethorpe is an international expert specialising in industrial heritage with over four decades of experience working in the heritage sector.
Initially this centred around survey, recording and the development of national inventories, but later expanded to include policy, conservation, and protection.
Much of this activity was focused initially on Scotland and specifically at The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) before he moved to Historic Scotland, the national body responsible for the built heritage in Scotland.
In 2003, Miles was elected onto the Board of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH), taking on more a international role. He has since worked on World Heritage projects, playing a key role in the successful nomination of the Forth Bridge in 2015.

He continues to work with international partners including UNESCO and ICOMOS, and between 2018 and 2024, served two terms as President of TICCIH.
He has edited, authored and co-authored/edited a number of books and papers relating to industrial heritage, and mining and energy in particular. Having retired from Historic Environment Scotland in 2024, he continues to provide advice and also gives lectures both at Edinburgh University and, on invitation, throughout the world.
